The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a part of the second largest rainforest in the world. It is often referred to as the second lung of the world with the Amazon. However, the Congo Basin sequesters more carbon than all the tropical rainforests combined. It is also home to the largest tropical peatlands, which makes up 4% of the Congo rainforest, and stores the equivalent of 20 years of the United States’ carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels. In addition, Congo produces 70% of the worlds cobalt, a mineral which is a vital component of rechargeable batteries, and indispensable for powering the green/clean energy sector.
We will discuss with frontline organizers from Congo's rainforest and mining communities the centrality and importance of the Congo in these two dominant global spheres: Climate crisis and Green Energy transition.
