The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) sits at the forefront of the climate emergency and the green energy transition. Congo produces 70% of the world's cobalt which is vital to the Clean Energy transition. The United States, Europe and other countries from around the world are feverishly seeking secure sources of cobalt and other critical minerals to become less reliant on China for minerals that are vital to green energy transition. The speaker will address the centrality of the Democatic Republic of the Congo in facilitating a green energy transition. He will also explore the role of social and climate justice advocates in mobilizing support for artisanal workers at the bottom of the mineral supply chain.
