Smartphones and computers we cannot put down for a single moment. Household appliances that make our lives more convenient. The ever-increasing number of electric vehicles and AI tools. Rare metals are used in all of these. Let’s turn our attention across the seas. The latest weaponry deployed in wars with no end in sight, and the transport aircraft that carry it. Rare metals are also indispensable in the manufacture of drones, which have undergone dramatic advancements in recent years.

The source of many rare metals is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, situated in the centre of the African continent, some 13,400 kilometres from Japan.

Do you know? Behind the electronics industry that underpins our convenient lifestyles, and the military industry set to expand further in Japan, lie the land grabs, forced labour, environmental pollution and unending conflict endured by the people living in the Congo.

This event will feature a screening of the film *LWANZO (Cobalt)* by Petna Ndaliko Katondoro, an internationally acclaimed film director and social activist, as well as a performance of *Nzadi-Kongo (River-Congo)’ by Ayagirwe Chanda Joviane, followed by a talk with members of the Basandja Coalition and activists and scholars working in support of the Congo.

Physically, the Congo locates at a very distant from Japan. Yet, even today, your fingertips are touching a fragment of Congolese soil. That is precisely why we want you to learn more about the Congo’s history and current situation. Let us connect with the people of the Congo, who radiate a strength like the sun even under the harshest conditions, and reflect together on the future of our planet and our children!

The event will be introduced and hosted by Toshie Takeuchi, an artist originally from Agui Town who is now based in Denmark, and Sakamoto, who is involved in peace activities in Handa City. If you would like to take part, please tick the ‘Yes’ box below.

*Donations will be collected at the venue on the day. All donations received will be used to cover the costs of running the event and to fund the Basandja Coalition’s aid activities in the Kivu region of north-eastern Congo.
